Your Heat Pump-  Grant Application

The process is to carry out a BER DEAP calculation providing a base line BER value and then a specification with options comparing U-Values and required targets.

The specification we provide would include building elements such as floors, external walls, roofs and windows/doors. Also some standard recommendations around the heating system, airtightness and ventilation. Radiator and underfloor heating emmiters sizing calculation if required..

Thermal bridging details should be ok if you're externally insulating. However, if thinking of internal drylining to any part of the dwelling then good detailing and interstitial condensation analysis is vital to avoiding condensation and mould growth down the line. Thermal bridging can add 15% to the elemental heat loss and reducing this at the construction stage with careful detailing will reduce condensation risk and heat losses.

A lot of the relevant information such as ACDs (Acceptable Construction Details) are available from the Dept. of Environment web site.

Solar PV should be considered and future planned, either on the E/W roof slopes or ground mounted in the garden with a South orientation for a greater and more useful wattage output. Electric cars will be the norm within the next 3 years when charging points will be more widely available.

Heat Pump Grant Application - The simple steps

To start we would need to carry out an on-site survey and register the BER certificate.

Once that's completed we then issue the Technical Assessment (based on the second set of BER calculations for any proposed extension/renovations etc.).

The TA will need to be attached to the BEHS (The Better Energy Homes Scheme) grant application.

We won't need the Heat Pump designer specification at that stage and we will provide the BER Dwelling Report to the installer/designer. The final specification of the installed heat pump will be used in the final BER calculation and this second BER Certificate will be used in the declaration of works form needed to draw down the grant monies.

We can also calculate the room by room radiator/underfloor emitter size/pipe centres if needed. However, this is usually done by the designer or installer and is required for the sign off and drawdown of the grant monies.

Keep in mind the schedule for construction works. SEAI had a 6 month deadline to complete the heat pump/insulation upgrades etc. This deadline may be extended to 9 months. Always contact SEAI before making the Grant Application and wait until you are sure works will be finished and signed off by all contractors within the 6/9 months SEAI allow you.

Include in the Grant Application anything you think you might do like solar pv, heating controls, attic insulation. You don't have to complete all measures applied for. but you cant add any further measures to you original grant application.

                                                      If in doubt contact us.

If not exulating (External Insulation) some section/s of external walls confirm with SEAI how grant might be proportioned between any two wall insulation measures. e.g. Internal Drylining and External Wall Insulation.
